Take Another Little Piece of My Heart

The Sweet Smell of Success

Grief: the traditional gesture of upraised arms

Sorrow and grief. The Tree raises its arms lamenting the loss of a limb. A weakness in its structure or illness. So in the fullness of its glory, the rich colors of fall, signal the transition to winter and the coldness of death. So too is my dog Aesop moving into that next stage. Melanoma, blackness and nothingness. May his life be spared for one more year at least.

The Fall: when the leaf turned red

Knowledge seized from the Tree of Knowledge engendered self awareness and then shame. Eve's first garment was a leaf to hide her genitals and her breasts, her nakedness; then she discovered that her body's equilibrium had gone awry and she now bled monthly. Her leaf turned red, impregnated by blood; Eve was cursed, and her female descendants still bear this "curse." The menstruating girl is isolated, and in some cultures becomes untouchable and most be cleansed.

of course this is nonsense, but it is still a global "matter of fact; women are the scapegoat for the troubles that have befallen humanity. amazing.
