Pollution in Tenafly, New Jersey: Tenakill Brook, May 23
On May 23, 2010, during an early evening walk around the Tenafly Commons, we looked over a bridge at the intersection of Tenafly Road and Chestnut Street. We were astonished to see milky white fluids flowing from beneath the bridge into a feeder stream to the Tenakill Brook. That brook is a major source for our drinking water, which is processed at United Water treatment plants. At about 7:22 pm we notified the Tenafly Police department, which responded promptly. They in turn called the Tenafly Fire Department that likewise arrived at the scene. According to Mr. Peter Rustin, mayor of Tenafly, water samples were taken to determine the content of the spill into the water. Pictures follow that show the fluid that entered the Tenakill Brook.
