Julian Benjamin Koslow: Happy Birthday

Julian Benjamin Koslow: Happy Birthday

The babe's name? Julian for a little English boy whose mother was calling him in a pine forest outside of Rome. She called Julian, Julian. I thought that was a wonderful name and so it came to pass that my son was so-named. Then too Julian Bond was honored. And Benjamin. No one in my family was named Benjamin or in his father's. Benjamin was in honor of Benjamin Gruenberg, the father of Ernest Gruenberg and grandfather of Nick, Ann, and Matthew. Benjamin G was an exemplar of kindness and wisdom and was a model to emulate.

The Lyrical Tree

the tree said it was about fifty years ago since I last heard that sweet music

Seen on Fifth Avenue: a swan eats a worm

Perception and mind. Mind perceives a swan or a long-necked bird eating a wriggling worm, but mind could also read the text differently. No longer humorous, a Calder-like creature, it becomes an allusive abstraction of suffering. How manifold are perceptions.

Narcisssim: a variant

"I only like people who like me." so said the man.

The Lost Masterpiece: a conundrum

A weathered frame is suspended on a brick wall. The wall is located on a building situated on 66th Street, between 66th and 65th Street, between Fifth Avenue and Madison Avenue. The narrative as to how this came to be is lost. A Magritte, almost; a clever inventor or merely a person who could not throw away the frame? Or perhaps the imagery was too charged or undercharged. A curiosity that does not offer any clues. It is, but its story cannot be told. Can it be compared to an unidentified body?

Memory: Present and Past

the precision of the present, the here and now, and memories of the past, unclear or cannot be focused, yet vivid sensations of color, sentiment; elusive moments that vanish but are not forgotten

Christmas Cactus:a remembrance of Beate Caspari-Rosen

Beate Caspari-Rosen, MD, (1910--1995) had a Christmas Cactus that bloomed annually. When we inherited it after my mother's death, the plant was about 10 years old. The cactus is in full-bloom now and is a living remembrance of one so dear to me. At about 25 years of age the plant, which she cared for an enjoyed not least because it was beautiful but also the seemingly static sleep state would erupt always at the same time of year into a fantastic display of color, the flowers shapes so unusual too.
