Beate B. Caspari-Rosen, Happy Birthday, 97 years

Beate Caspari-Rosen was born in Berlin, Germany, on March 14, 1910 and died in Hamden, Connecticut, USA, on July 8, 1995. She received her medical degree in Berlin and practiced her specialty, ophthamology, in the United States. She ran pediatric ophthamological clinics throughout New York City, providing superb medical care for the poorest citizens in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and the Bronx. She also worked for the Lady Garments' Union in a similar capacity. There, her patients were mature and elderly. By young and old she was admired and respected; she always listened to her patients and to communicate with the young she studied Spanish. Aware of the stigma associated with the "clinic glass frames," she negotiated with optometrists, who at that time provided the eye glasses, so that the children would not be humiliated among their peers. This is but one of numerous instances where her concern for patients effected positive results.
My mother "Atta," as she was known to her family and friends is sorely missed.
